Stories from Moria Refugee Camp

Katie Kleinsasser

Picture Book

These are true, real-life stories. They talk about hardship and violence. They are not easy stories to read, but they are presented in a way that even young children can hear them and understand. They are stories that our children need to hear. We are so blessed, and there is no reason to take those blessings for granted!

Blessing’s Escape

This book is about a young girl, Blessing, her brother, Samuel, and their parent’s long flight from Nigeria, Africa. A group called Boko Haram chased many people out of Nigeria in an attempt to gain power. This causes terrible bloodshed and horrible conflict. Out of this conflict, Blessing and her family fled from Nigeria all the way to Moria Refugee Camp in Lesvos, Greece. Their story is fraught with separate, conflict and hardship, but it is written in a way that even young children can read and understand.

Hafsa’s Voyage

Hafsa’s Voyage tells the story of a young girl, Hafsa and her family’s journey of fleeing the violence in Aleppo, Syria. Hafsa’s brother was injured in a bombing. After he recovered, Hafsa’s father made arrangements for their family to be smuggled out of the country. They walked until they could take a smuggler’s boat to Lesvos. They were captured but eventually made it to Camp Moria. Again, a hard story, but written in a way that everyone can read and understand.

Afran’s Journey

Afran lived on the mountain of Sinjar in Iraq. He enjoyed a peaceful life with his three sisters and parents. One day, this life was shattered as their village was attacked. Afran, his little sister Dila and his parents escaped. They walk and walked until they reach Turkey. Even in Turkey, they weren’t safe. Afran’s father made plans to go to Germany. They didn’t have enough money for the whole family to go, so Afran, Dila and their father went to Germany. This journey was hard, long and perilous. They did make it to Germany and eventually, their mother came home.
