Summary:
This book explores the vast ocean through the accomplishments of Oceanographer, Sylvia Earle. It starts with her childhood and her love of all things that lived in the outdoors. The book then follows Sylvia through all her accomplishments. It highlights some of her underwater mission. She swam with humpback whales and when she was diving into the deep, dark ocean. The book ends with encouraging kids to learn about the ocean and the creatures living in the ocean.
Opinion:
This is a secular book, so I expected it to have references to evolution and to strongly advocate for environmental concerns. I was pleasantly surprised. I couldn’t find any evolution references. The book encourages us to keep our planet clean, but it didn’t take it to an extreme level. There are two pictures with Sylvia featured in a swimming suit, but it’s a reasonably modest one. Most pictures she is in a full body wetsuit.
I’ve always been fascinated by the ocean, so I was happy to find a nice book about an oceanographer. All in all, I've been very pleased with this book. The pictures are exceptional. They highlight the interesting sea creatures that you would find while diving in the ocean. This book will encourage children to find out more about the ocean and what’s in it. It has certainly inspired my students!
